Ok so one of my goals is to be able to play a really sick guitar solo. I remember when I went to the Red Hot Chili Peppers concert and was blown away by John's solo playing and I just knew I wanted to be able to do that. Well, it isn't as easy as he makes he look!! :) But I'm well on my way and I thought I would share with you a product that really helps if you are trying to learn to solo too. It's called Riff Master Pro and it basically takes all the badass solos that are ingrained in all our heads (Hendrix, Clapton, Page, etc) and slows them down to where us average folks can really grasp it and learn to play it. This is a 2000 Ford Harley Davidson F-150 with 86,000 highway miles. The exterior color is black with a black leather interior, automatic transmission, automatic windows, cd player, ice cold A/C, etc. The truck is in excellent shape and drives like a dream. It gets almost 17 mpg, which is excellent for a big truck. It has always been serviced in accordance to dealer recommendations and has been treated like a baby. Here are some of the features of the car:

The car is a two owner car and I have owned it since 2004 and have put about 46,000 miles on it without an issue. It has been trouble free, great to drive, and gets lots of stares and “thumbs-up” as I drive around town.

The car has been maintained at Mall of Georgia Ford, Gainesville Ford, and Firestone Service Center in Gainesville. Besides having the oil changed and tires rotated every 3,000 miles, I recently had all four brake pads replaced (to the tune of $600), all fluids flushed and replaced, and added a K&N air filter.

I have professionally installed a Diamond 1000-watt amplifier and a 12-inch subwoofer, all enclosed in a custom-made box that fits perfectly under the back seat of the truck. I also have switched the stock lights for aftermarket “Euro-style” head and taillights that really make the truck standout.

Since owning the car, I have had one minor fender bender in 2006. I fell asleep in bumper-to-bumper traffic while driving and bumped the car in front of me going less than 20 mph. Carfax labels the wreck as “significant” because I couldn’t drive the car away from the wreck, but the wreck was not significant by any means. All repairs were done at Taylor’s Collision in Suwanee, GA. Taylor’s is a “AAA” Certified collision repair center and is known for their superior quality. Taylor’s informed me that the wreck caused ZERO engine or frame damage and all they had to do was replace the hood, bumper, grill, and radiator. I had them wet sand and repaint the entire car while the truck was there because I wanted it to look right. That’s the kind of person I am. It is either done the right way or it won’t be done at all. Taylor’s Collision did a fabulous job and I have driven over 25,000 miles since the accident without a single issue.

For the money, you cannot find a better truck. This isn’t your everyday boring Ford F-150 and has power and looks that really set it apart. Not many 8-year old trucks look this good and still get stares as they drive down the street. My Grandfather, Bill Healan, was a GM mechanic for over 40 years and looked the truck over for me and said this truck was built so good it could easily last for 200,000+ miles. He actually owns a 1996 Ford F-150 because he feels Ford makes better trucks than GM.

The only thing the truck needs is tires, as they have about 20% life left. If the buyer wants, I will replace the tires for $500 over the final price of the truck. If the buyer would like to do this his or her self, they are welcome to do that as well. I will leave it up to the buyer.

Welcome guitar players and music lovers! My name is Lee Burrell and this is my little blog. Nothing special, nothing flashy…it’s just me. As you can probably tell by my YouTube name, BenWannaBee, I am pretty obsessed with Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals. I’ve seen him play, met him, talked with him, hugged him, and emulated him. He inspired my to pick up a guitar and wail away. Anyways, I have played guitar for going on two years now and I remember how hard and frustrating it was to get going and not get discouraged. Getting in tune, reading tabs, playing, singing (or trying to) were seemingly impossible. But eventually I did and so can you. I am going to post instruction videos, tabs, my guitar playing and singing, and review some of the products that helped me learn guitar. I'm still learning more and more everyday and my learning is your learning. Come along for the journey! September 15, 2006 @ Chastain Park in Atlanta, GA. I arrived at noon for the show that day. It was a beautiful day. The sun was out and a cool crisp breeze blew lazily through the trees. I sat in the parking lot playing my guitar, talked with some new friends from .net (Ben's message board that I frequent too often) and enjoyed a few NewCastle Brown Ale's. Listed to the sound check, stood in line, and talked about past Ben shows with other die-hards. Damien Marley started us off and Ben followed with a good performance. We are living in a fantastic time period! With web 2.0 we can find anything our heart's desire at the click of a button. We can schedule a flight around the world, find unbiased reviews about the latest gadget, do all out Christmas shopping, or even find a girlfriend, all on the internet (though I don't recommend it, trust me). Just as little as 5 years ago, if you were trying to learn the guitar, you would probably have to: -Pay $50 an hour to have private lessons -Buy an endless number of guitar books -Pester your guitar playing friend to death to teach you -Spend hours and hours listen to a CD (yes a CD!) breaking down songs you liked so you could play them Today, my friends, you don't have to do any of this to learn to play guitar. Honestly you don't have to spend a dime to learn to play (besides buying the guitar) if you truly didn't want to (though there are some great products out there that I have used to accelerate my learning that I'll tell you about later). Today, we have YouTube! YouTube is a huge time-saver and knowledge base for you. Here's some reasons why: -There are thousands of guitar instructional videos on literally anything you can ever want to know about playing the guitar -You can post videos of your playing and get (mostly) honest feedback about your playing -You can look up any artist and see EXACTLY how his/her song is played -You can look up people doing covers of songs you want to learn to play and ask them questions about how to play the song (I've found most people to be very hospitable and friendly on helping me out with my questions) -You can get ideas for your own songs from videos (Chord progressions, rhythmic patterns, lyrics, etc) -You can watch concert videos -Finally, you can see people that are worse at playing and singing than you are (yes, I promise there is someone worse than you, no matter what you think!) Is that not amazing! The possibilities are truly endless. All you have to do is put in the time and keep at it and you will be playing your favorite songs in no time. Now my job is to help you find worthwhile videos (not all of them are good let me tell you), show you how to play some of the songs I have learned, hook you up with tabs, and tell you what stuff has worked for me and what hasn't. I'll do my end, now you keep up yours! It's a great time to be learning guitar...

Time Will Tell - Original Weissenborn piece

The Weissenborn is an amazing instrument! Just learning to play it has been a challenging and rewarding experience. The vibrations that this thing can produce are something to be heard. Unfortunatly my camera mic doesn't do it justice!! Here's a little history on the Weissenborn Guitar:

Hermann C. Weissenborn a German piano and violinmaker immigrated to New York around 1902. In 1910 he moved to Los Angeles where he mainly did repair work on instruments until the end of the decade. With the Hawaiian music boom of the early 20's, Weissenborn started making ukeleles, flattops and eventually his captivating Hawaiian steel guitars.

With their raised string action, frets flush with the fingerboard, square hollow necks and featherweight koa wood construction the Weissenborns offered both greater volume and sustain than conventional Spanish neck guitars for Hawaiian lap steel playing. Due to their sweet timbre, expressive tone and eye-catching design these guitars were an instant hit and stayed in demand until the advent of the Nationals and Dobros. Hermann Weissenborn died in 1937 amidst debts and declining business for his shop.

It is important to credit Chris J. Knutsen for the original square neck, rope binding and overall design of the Hawaiian steel guitar. Knutsen, another immigrant born as Johan Christian Kammen in Norway on June 24, 1862, started building Hawaiian steel guitars as early as 1908. Both Knutsen and Weissenborn (as well as the Schireson brothers) built Kona style guitars almost exclusively to a Mr. Charles S. DeLano starting around 1915. DeLano held himself out as an "instructor of Hawaiian steel guitar" and most likely sold many guitars to his students, after 1923, the Konas were built exclusively by Weissenborn.

It is impossible to determine just when Weissenborn began to experiment with his own designs in crafting Hawaiian steel guitars, there are some noteworthy differences though between his and Knutsen's Hawaiians.

Most of the Knutsens have spruce tops, all have lateral or diagonal bracing on the back, also due to his eccentric building skills many of his guitars used some crude solutions such as: wide number of screws, brackets, wing nuts, sheared-off tuning machine plates, odd-shaped nuts and dressmaker's seam tape rather than wood strips to reinforce ribs and butt fitted back plates. H. Weissenborn's guitars however, used mainly koa tops, he used X bracing exclusively and also adopted 4 different models or "styles" as he would advertise them, creating a growing scale of ornamentation from basic to fancy. Other vintage Hawaiian steel guitars worth mentioning are the Schireson brand: Lyric, Mai-Kai and Hilo, mostly made by Oscar Schmidt. Also the Brinks (Brink was a Michigan violinmaker who appeared to have experimented), Greenfields and according to preeminent Weissenborn researcher Ben Elder ("after the Weissenborns and Knutsens, the next best vintage acoustic steel I've played") the Mastertone Special, an absurdly cheap looking model made by Gibson from about 1939-42. Of course none of these instruments compare sound, feel or look wise to a Knutsen/Weissenborn Hawaiian. Thanks to players like David Lindley, Ben Harper Bob Brozman and Jerry Douglas today the Weissenborn guitar - more than 70 years since the last one was manufactured - is enjoying resurgence. It is now used for virtually any musical style. From country to rock, Hawaiian to blues and now Brazilian music as well! The downside to the Weissenborn's renaissance and its renovated demand (specially among collectors) is that prices have gone sky high. Luckily many wonderful luthiers and guitar makers have come up with their versions of the expensive originals. I have been hypnotized by this instrument's sound from the very first day I heard it. It has the sound I only heard previously in my dreams and it allows me to come up with very unusual ideas for my compositions. I've had a lot of people ask me, "Which guitar should I buy?" or "How do I know what to look for?" Well, I've found a great little video by my buddy David that explains what to look for, variations in different woods, sound differences, etc. Check it out below. I own a Blueridge BR-160 (You can see it in my videos :)) and I really enjoy playing it. The wood has "warmed up" since I bought it and it sounds better everyday! Keep playing friends. I highly recommend David's videos and website. Many of them are free and they are excellent for beginners. He explains everything very clearly and it really helped my when I first started out (well it still helps me today to be honest). If you have looked online for guitar lessons at all then you have probably run across the "Jamorama" guitar learning package. The first thing you see on the sites sales page is:

Pretty convincing stuff right? Well I bought it and am not exactly playing like Jimi or Eric (and yes I practiced). Jamorama isn't a bad course. It just isn't a great course, in my opinion. I've heard from others that they really liked it and it helped them out alot. I suspect that for many people this is the case. Here's what a newbie said about it:

"This is a basic Get you up and playing course - the idea is to get you used to playing chords - thats it - nothing really on scales or theory or lead breaks, just chords. I've received many requests to post a good Karma Police lesson and after scouring YouTube (the best guitar learning tool ever!!.... hint: see earlier post) for hours :) I have found a lesson by John Russo that is great at breaking this song down for beginners like me. I've included the lyrics also. Make sure you learn the ENTIRE song without the lyrics (all the chords/rhythms/etc) before you attempt to play and sing. Part five in our continuing Beginner's Lessons focuses on the blues scale. The blues scale, as well as the minor pentatonic scales, are really great and easy ways to get you into soloing quickly. Make sure you learn the scale patterns, fingerings, and be able to shift smoothly between the notes. Once you have it down, try playing some "licks" that you come up with. Then you can look up backing tracks on the internet and solo over those. With the blues scale and finger picking basics behind us, it is time to learn another scale shape. The minor scale. It's just a little bit more complicated than the blues scale, but not too bad. Just watch the video and you'll get it quickly. Remember to practice! :) HUGE HINT -- I wish someone had told me this when I had started playing, but when you learn a scale pattern, you can use than same pattern all over the fretboard to play in different "keys." So if you are playing with someone and they say, "Let's jam in G minor," you can play the same A minor pentatonic scale you will learn in the video and move it down two frets to the G. This one focuses on power chords (used in almost every rock band like Green Day, Incubus, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nickelback, and everyone in between) and the ever important Palm Muting technique. A great guitar player once told me it's not what you play but what you don't play that makes you great. He was referencing muting various strings (unbelievably important in weissenborn playing and something I've yet to master) while playing as to get the perfect sound without anything extra. Beginner Lesson 9 - Bar Chords

When I started playing guitar 2 years ago (has it really been that long and I still can't play very good??? wow!) bar chords were the hardest thing for me to get. Switching between them and having enough strength to bar down all the strings seemed almost impossible!! But guess what? I kept at it and eventually got it. Now I enjoy the ability to play lots of songs with strictly bar chords (think everything by Jack Johnson) and you will be able to do this to. You must work on your hand strength. Getting a stress ball and squeezing the hell out of it in just one thing you can do. Just remember not to get frustrated and keep at it. If you seem like you just can't get it, go back and work on something that you have already got down, like your G, C and D open chords. You'll get it!! Just keep playing mates! Jack Johnson - Sitting, Waiting, Wishing

Here's a great song to finally get those bar chords down pat. Jack Johnson's song, "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing" is a great song to play and everyone seems to love it. Here's some history on it....Sitting, Waiting, Wishing is a song written and played by Jack Johnson. It is the sixth song on the album "In Between Dreams" which was released in February 2005. It was released as a single in April2005.

The single, "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing" only became a chart hit in the United Kingdom after the re-release climbed into the Top 75 following Jack Johnson's exposure on the 2006 BRIT Awards on ITV1. The single climbed to hit status a week before the release of "Better Together". Both the original release and indeed the re-issue had failed to chart until this point. However, the single was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. Additionally, it was nominated for Best Male Video at the MTV Video Music Awards Japan ceremony in 2006.

The music video features reverse narration, similar to Coldplay's video for The Scientist. For the video, Johnson had to learn to say the lyrics backwards.

This song hints towards a story of a man who loves a woman very much, but his approaches are denied again and again. The man talks about how they are meant to be together and that even though he loves her, she keeps throwing his love back; shown in the line "building me up, you keep shooting me down". Some of the final lyrics state that he is getting tired of loving her while getting nothing in return, and that she is just playing him for a fool.

If you didn't already know, Clapton was inspired to play guitar by blues legend Robert Johnson, so much so that he covered an entire album of his tunes called "Me and Mr. Johnson."Clapton has basically carried the torch as far as guitar playing, song writing, and innovation goes for almost 3 decades now. I had the privilege of seeing Mr. Clapton live and it was an experience for sure! Old, young, fat, slow, black, while.... the place was packed. So you've got the blues. Everyone has had the blues at one time... Now you can sing all about them. Remember though...

Singing Blues Guide

It is easy to write the lyrics for blues if you keep the following things in mind:
- Blues generally begin with ‘woke up this morning’.
- If you really cannot avoid it and want to begin the Blues with ‘I got a good woman’, follow it up immediately with something bad such as ‘with biggest belly in town’.
- Repeat the line twice and then write a third line that ends with almost a rhyming word. Now, it may read like this – ‘I got a good woman with biggest belly in town, I got a good woman with biggest belly in town, She has legs of an elephant and weighs 500 pounds’.
- You will hardly ever find colors like ‘violet, beige and mauve’ being mentioned in Blues as it is difficult to find rhyming words for them.
People devoted to Blues use car like Chevies, Cadillacs and broken-down trucks or may use Greyhound buses and southbound trains. The only other transportation that they use fairly well is ‘Walking’.
Blues are sung who are fixing to die, so teenagers normally have nothing to do with it. Singing Blues is the domain for adults.
Hard times are called Blues in New York City, Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City but they are just depression in Vermont, Tucson or North Dakota are just depression.
Blues are confined to places where it rains often.
Blues can never take place in a well-lit office or a shopping mall with sparkling lights. You need to sit in the parking lot or by the dumpster to have Blues. Other options can be the highway, a jailhouse, an empty bed or even the bottom of a whiskey glass.
There are three steps to Build Your Own Blues Singer Name:
- Choose Name of physical infirmity to precede your name such as Blind, Cripple or Lame.
- Choose a name of Fruit to be your first name such as Lemon, Lime or Kiwi.
- Choose Last name of a US president such as Jefferson, Johnson or Fillmore.
- So now, your Blues Singer name can be Lame Lemon Clinton.
Blues singers cannot have computers and for them, the three R’s are not Reading, Writing and Arithmetic but Railroads, Running and Rehab.

One of the greatest songs ever written. "Like a Rolling Stone" is a song by Bob Dylan from his album Highway 61 Revisited. Bruce Springsteen Concert Review - By John Halverson

Bruce Springsteen, once called the future of rock 'n' roll, is now its glorious past. Pounding. Restless. Unadorned and unstoppable. Dressed in tight jeans and a black shirt with the sleeves rolled up, Bruce brought his throwback style to the Bradley Center in Milwaukee Monday night. There was no opening act, no choreography, no stopping-proving that the basics can embolden a crowd far better than gimmicks. The word had been that he'd been a little bland - by Bruce standards - in St. Paul the night before. If so, Bruce certainly made up for it in Wisconsin. His energy level would put most singers of any age to shame. Blistering from the get-go, songs cascading one to the next-five, six, seven in a row-Bruce was like the kid in his hot rod burning rubber in the high school parking lot. Tina Turner without the short skirt. Jerry Lee Lewis under control. Joined by the E Street Band, Bruce isn't about fey prancing and costume changes. He's got Elvis's wide stance, the backward body lean and stomp-around-the-stage masculinity. He attacks one guitar as though it was a snake in heat only to exchange it for another after strangling it into submission. Everything's direct and muscular, a throwback to the days when rockers were "Blackboard Jungle" bad boys. Bruce's craggy face is an open songbook, a bar-fighter's face. His Mount Rushmore jaw and hooked nose were seemingly carved by a stonecutter who only knew sharp angles. Moving from joy to angst-ridden and back again, it seethes with emotion-cracking into fissures and grooves with one lyric only to snarl back to life with another. And, through it all, Bruce seems to be having as great time as anyone in the audience. His voice, as gravelly and booming at the beginning of a concert as at the end, was worn to perfection at birth. His pipes are damaged goods of the best kind. As for nostalgia, forget it. If you go to a Bruce Springsteen concert to hear the golden oldies, you've come to hear the wrong musician. True believers know every song by heart, but for most of us it's the performances, not the records, that sizzle their way into rock 'n' roll history. Bruce may be 58 years old on the calendar, but no one's told him that yet-so the rest of us boomers don't believe it about ourselves either. For Bruce, there's no living in the past, no waiting to have a good time. The son of a bus driver and schooled by watching Elvis on Ed Sullivan, Bruce never cheats an audience out of its hard-earned money. As if to prove it, the closing song was a St. Patrick's Day anthem, one he performed for one audience only, for a single performance this year at least. He didn't have to do it. But Bruce is a down-to-earth lunch-pail performer, who was working overtime Monday night to make sure everyone went home happy. It was a job well done.

Learning Guitar for Free (for Now) on YouTube - By Frank Langfitt

Let's say you want to learn to play guitar — but you don't have the time or money for lessons. Why not try YouTube? A number of people teach guitar on the video-sharing Web site, offering lessons for free. In the past few months, two teachers have posted around 200 videos that demonstrate everything from basic strumming techniques to the opening riff of "Sweet Home Alabama." So far, people around the world have watched the videos a total of more than 3.5 million times. One of the teachers is David Taub, who lives in San Diego and often appears wearing a flannel shirt and a backwards baseball cap. A one-time bar band rocker from New Jersey, he opens each video with the same line: "What's up, good people!" His most popular video, a simplified version of the Eagles' "Hotel California," has been viewed more than 125,000 times. The other teacher is Justin Sandercoe, who lives in London, where he teaches guitar and plays with a famous pop singer. He's a mellow presence with an impish grin. Among his song lessons is an acoustic version of Britney Spear's "Hit Me Baby One More Time" that is surprisingly affecting. The teachers play slowly and use close-ups, showing each finger movement. If you don't get it at first, you can hit replay. It's like having a teacher with endless patience. The lessons are informal and feel home-made. Sandercoe sometimes appears sitting on his floor, with his hair matted at different angles. Taub's lessons are mostly unedited and include moments like his golden retriever eating his guitar pick. Taub sees the videos, at least in part, as a marketing tool for his paid instructional Web site, NextLevelGuitar.com. His videos emerged last year as an experiment when one of his students, Tim Gilberg, shot video of Taub teaching. "We filmed about 10 minutes in his backyard," Gilberg recalls. "I put it up on Google. Then I forgot about it. Basically, two months later I went to see how many visitors we had. There were about 6,800 visitors, and I was like: Wow!" Then they posted the videos to YouTube, and the audience took off. On the free videos, Taub teaches the basic chords to popular songs, but he holds off explaining some of the riffs so he can drive people to his site. After playing a riff from Sheryl Crow's "If It Makes You Happy," he stops playing and says, "But if you want to learn that, you're going to have to go to our full site for the lead lines, okay?" Gilberg says the Web site has hundreds of members after only six weeks. Justin Sandercoe also has a teaching Web site — justinguitar.com. He has a few ads and takes donations through Paypal to cover the site's hosting fees. But Sandercoe doesn't charge visitors; he says he sees the site as more of a public service. "I like the idea of being able to deliver quality guitar lessons to people who can't afford lessons, or who are in places where there's not that kind of access to somebody who can teach them the right stuff," he says. When Sandercoe was growing up in Tasmania, it wasn't easy for him to find great teachers. He hopes his videos will help kids in places like Sri Lanka or India who may not be able to learn otherwise. Sandercoe now has fans around the world, who often e-mail him with questions and requests for specific lessons. One is Linda Dumitru, who lives in the Netherlands and used to pay $26 for a half-hour lesson. But she stopped, she says, because she couldn't afford it. Then one day she typed "Johnny B. Goode" into YouTube and found one of Sandercoe's videos. Now, she plays along to his videos in her apartment after dinner. Dumitru says Sandercoe's laid-back approach makes her want to learn. She talks about him as if he were a helpful, next-door neighbor. "Every time he comes, he says: 'Hi, I'm Justin.' He says, 'Don't worry if you have trouble with the chords, because everybody has problems with it.'" She adds: "It's like he understands you. He knows what you're going through." When Sandercoe isn't teaching, he plays with Katie Melua, a star in Europe, so he's used to some attention. But his work on the Internet is raising his profile in ways he didn't expect. "I got recognized on a bus the other day," he says, sounding amazed. "I literally went into town to do a bit of shopping, and I was on the way back and this kid goes: 'Are you Justin, the guy who teaches from YouTube?'" But if learning pop songs for free online sounds too good to be true, it may be. John Palfrey, executive director of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School, says most of the songs Sandercoe and Taub teach are under copyright. He thinks it's only a matter of time before a licensing company orders YouTube to take them down. "There's a very strong argument that the re-use of well-known chords in the sequence the instructor played them would be a violation of the copyright," Palfrey says. Sandercoe doesn't think he's doing anything wrong. After all, he says, he rarely plays the songs all the way through. But Palfrey says all it takes is a few notes. And although Sandercoe sees his Internet teaching as a public service, he has benefited from it. Since he put his Web site up last year, he has developed a long waiting list for the lessons he teaches in person. And both he and Taub say that's still the best way to learn. If someone tells Sandercoe to take down his song lessons, he says he will. But his most valuable videos are the ones that teach guitar basics — things like strumming, scales and finger-picking. And even in the digital age, no one holds a copyright on those things.
